The Eight Diagram Pole Fighter - Rumble in Hong Kong

During the Song dynasty, a Mongol army, with the help of the treacherous General Pun Mei, manages to lure General Yeung Yip – who is loyal to the dynasty – and his seven sons into an ambush. Only the experienced spearfighter Yeung Ng Long and his brother Yeung Luk Long, the fifth and sixth sons, manage to escape; the others are killed or taken prisoner. The sixth son returns home traumatised, whilst the fifth flees to a Buddhist monastery, where he is only admitted if he renounces all violence. He does so, but wishes to continue his training. Spears are forbidden, but sticks are not, and using these sticks he develops his own unique fighting style: the eight diagrams pole fighting technique, a technique that will prove immensely useful to him later on.

Even before filming was completed, ‘Son 6’ actor Alexander Fu Sheng was killed in a car accident. As a result, director Liu Chia-liang had to rewrite the story: instead of ‘Son 6’, ‘Son 5’ now became the hero of this adventure.
