A senior civil servant, who has only just retired, is travelling with his party to a remote inn, The Black Tavern. Rumour has it that he is carrying a chest full of valuables, and it is this chest that Zheng Shoushan, leader of a band of robbers, has set his sights on. Zheng, nicknamed the Whip Master, travels to the inn with his gang, takes it over and waits for the official to arrive. But he is not the only one who has set his sights on the chest; other gangs, such as the Three-Headed Cobra and the Five Spirits of Xiang Xi, would also be only too happy to get their hands on it. When the official finally arrives, he proves to be anything but defenceless – all hell breaks loose in the inn.
Whilst this spectacular martial-arts film was directed by Yip Wing-cho, the intricately choreographed fight scenes were directed by Simon Hsu, the man hired countless times by the Shaw Brothers for this very purpose.
