Peau d'âne - Jacques Demy encore

In 1694, the fairy tale Peau d’âne (Donkey Skin) by the French writer Charles Perrault was published, a story about sacrifice and true love. Almost three centuries later, Jacques Demy’s film adaptation was released, an enchanting musical brimming with fantasy, humour and colour. The lead role is played by Catherine Deneuve, the French star actress with whom Demy enjoyed working frequently. Deneuve would have preferred to sing the parts herself, but they were ultimately performed by Anne Germain. As is often the case, the music is by Michel Legrand.

A powerful king promised his recently deceased wife on her deathbed that he would only remarry a woman even more beautiful than she was. In the whole kingdom, there is only one such woman: the princess, his own daughter. But the princess has no desire to marry her father. With the help of her fairy godmother, she manages to escape from the kingdom, hidden beneath the skin of a magical donkey. She sets to work as a simple maid, until a prince discovers her true beauty.
