In the summer of 2002, 17-year-olds Callie and Minnie are about to finish their penultimate year at their secondary school in Arkansas. The two are best friends, despite being very different from one another. The self-assured Callie loves being the centre of attention and has grand plans for the future, whilst the shy Minnie prefers to stay in the background as much as possible and is certain she will lead an unremarkable life. Then tragedy strikes: Callie is killed in a car crash. Minnie is left utterly devastated; without her best friend, she doesn’t know how to carry on with her life. She seeks support from Callie’s mother, Helen, with whom she forms a complex yet special bond.
In their third film, directors Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson tell a sincere and tender story about loss, friendship and the search for identity and sexuality. O’Sullivan wrote the screenplay, whilst Katherine Mallen Kupferer and Sophie Okonedo play the leading roles.
