In the early 1990s, Yugoslavia is in turmoil; the economy is in a dire state and conflicts are rife. Marko and Vera are also affected by this: they work hard on their farm, but it brings them no reward. When an uncle from Denmark comes to visit, they begin to dream of a new life in that unknown country to the north. And so they set off. But the flat they’ve found is too small for the whole family, so they decide to leave their two sons behind for the time being; only their six-year-old daughter, Maja, comes with them. Denmark turns out not to be the welcoming country they’d hoped for. They find it difficult to adapt to the language and the Danish way of life.
At the age of six, director and actress Marijana Jankovic moved from Montenegro to Denmark, an experience she explored in the 2018 short film Maja. That experience also takes centre stage in Home, her feature film debut – a story about emigration and the question: what is home?
