The writer Sylvie is due to leave her Paris flat soon, as her cousin Celine, the flat’s co-owner, wants to sell it. Celine has brought along Adam, a homeless man, to help Sylvie with the move. Meanwhile, Sylvie is working on a novel in which betrayal and infidelity play a major role. She draws not only on her imagination, but also secretly spies on her neighbours across the way to draw inspiration from their daily routines. But when Adam also begins to interfere with the story, the plotlines start to take on a life of their own. Soon, the line between fiction and reality begins to blur.

The Iranian director Asghar Farhadi, winner of two Oscars, returns to France for his new film following Le passé. The sixth instalment of Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Dekalog, A Short Film About Love – about a voyeur who becomes obsessed with his neighbour across the street – served as the starting point. And he has assembled an all-star cast, including Isabelle Huppert, Vincent Cassel, Virginie Efira and Catherine Deneuve.
