Zhanna Agalakova had already built up an impressive career in journalism in Russia itself when, in 2005, she was posted to Paris, where she began reporting for Russian state television on all the major events in France and the European Union. Zhanna was convinced that her work served her homeland, but her Westernised teenage daughter Alice, born in Rome in 2002, regarded her work as Kremlin propaganda. To help Alice connect more with her Russian roots, Zhanna decides to take her on a journey through modern-day Russia – Putin’s Russia. It turns out to be a journey that tests not only their convictions, but also their relationship.
This documentary, Agalakova’s first film, portrays a woman who is increasingly beginning to doubt her role as a journalist. She has channelled that doubt into a film that is, at its core, about love and identity, but above all about the loss of the country where one belongs.
